Environment

Our head office is surrounded by fjords and mountains in one of the most beautiful natural areas in Norway. It goes without saying that we take into account both the internal and external environment by choosing good and recyclable materials. Below you will see a selection of documents that refer to Helland Møbler AS's environmental commitment and certifications.

Helland Strengthens Its Focus on Certified Solutions for the Hotel and Maritime Sectors

Helland is intensifying its commitment to certification by working systematically to obtain Wheelmark certification for all products designed for the maritime market. This ensures that our furniture is developed, tested and documented in full compliance with current regulations and standards for onboard use in ships and other maritime environments—where safety, durability and reliability are essential.

At the same time, we are implementing Crib 5 and Crib 7 certifications for products intended for the hotel and maritime sectors. These certifications verify compliance with stringent fire safety requirements and performance standards, which are critical in project-based environments and settings with high demands for occupant safety.

Through this focused initiative, Helland further strengthens its position as a trusted supplier of safe, sustainable and future-ready furniture solutions for hotels, cruise vessels and the broader maritime industry.

Sustainable furniture for hotel and maritime environments

Helland develops and delivers furniture and interior design solutions specifically tailored to the hotel and maritime sectors, where quality, functionality and sustainability are at the heart. Our products are designed for environments with high demands for durability, comfort and aesthetics, while contributing to reduced environmental impact.

We are continuously working to further develop the range, and new models are continuously being awarded the Nordic Ecolabel. Nordic Ecolabelled furniture and furnishings meet strict requirements for, among other things:

  • use of certified wood raw material, where a minimum of 70% of the wood comes from sustainable forestry
  • use of recycled plastic and metal
  • reduced use of substances harmful to the environment and health, including in surface treatment and flame retardants
  • high durability and wear resistance
  • good solutions for recycling at end of life
  • responsible management of waste in production

Helland is now launching more furniture with the Nordic Ecolabel, specially adapted for demanding environments within hotels, cruises and other maritime activities. The products are surface treated with a specially developed, acid-hardened varnish that provides high wear resistance and long life, unlike water-based varnishes.

As part of our sustainability requirements, the Nordic Ecolabel also sets requirements for textiles. This means that the upholstery fabrics used in our Nordic Ecolabelled products are either certified with the EU Ecolabel or the Nordic Ecolabel.

Through continuous product development and environmental certification, Helland contributes to sustainable and future-oriented furnishing solutions for the hotel and maritime sectors - without compromising on quality, design and comfort.

The products are certified by Ecolabelling in Norway under license number 2031 0098.

Møbelfakta – documented quality and safety

Norsk Møbelfakta is an independent certification scheme that documents the quality, strength and safety of furniture. The certification comes in addition to environmental certifications such as the Nordic Ecolabel, and ensures that the products are not only sustainable, but also tested for long life and safe use.

The criteria involve quality testing in an accredited laboratory, mainly according to European standards (NS-EN). Requirements include strength, stability, safety, surface durability and fire resistance.

The following furniture groups are covered by the scheme: tables, office and work desks, seating furniture, school and children's furniture, storage furniture, beds and mattresses.

The tests include, among others:

  • static and dynamic load tests
  • stability tests against tipping
  • control of pinching hazards and sharp edges
  • testing the surface's resistance to liquid, heat and abrasion
  • fire test of textiles (NS-EN 1021-1)

The certificate is valid for 5 years and requires a valid test report that is not older than 5 years. If a standard is updated, existing certificates remain valid for their original period.

Møbelfakta provides documentation that the furniture is strong, durable and safe to use – an important quality assurance for both public environments, the hotel and project markets.

Circular furniture with a long lifespan

We develop and manufacture furniture that can be upgraded, renewed and maintained – with the goal of significantly extending the product's lifespan. Our solutions are designed for easy replacement and upgrading of components, so that the furniture can be adapted to new needs and given a new lease of life over time.

Renewal can, for example, involve reupholstering worn textiles on existing frames, replacing foam in seat and back cushions, replacing individual components or frames, and full surface renovation of wood. This makes it possible to preserve the furniture's construction and quality, while upgrading its appearance and function.

In product development, we consciously collaborate with designers who combine strategic design with solid craftsmanship. Through well-thought-out constructions and material choices, we create furniture with high quality, robustness and flexibility – designed to last and be part of a circular value chain.
